Risposta ingegneristica
Measure the tank, then budget its parasitics. A 4.7 nF tank with 1 µH of loop inductance gives f_r = 2.32 MHz, Z_0 = 14.6 Ω, 685 A of peak current and 235 mJ stored. Hold the loss part of the damping ratio at or below 0.11 for 50 % delivery, keep 100 nH of stray inductance under 5 % of f_r, and pay 23.5 mJ of ESR loss per 1 µs attempt.
- Measure loop inductance first, including leads and coupling capacitor
- Compute f_r and Z_0 and check i_peak against the switch rating
- Hold R_total / (2 Z_0) at or below 0.11 to keep 50 % coupling
- Set the coupling capacitor reactance below 10 % of the leakage reactance
- Set the pre-charge margin at 20–25 % above breakdown voltage

A plasma cutting torch ignites from a resonant tank that rings the electrode-nozzle gap into breakdown, and field data shows 30–50 % of the ignition energy wasted. This article gives the tank equations, the damping ratio window, the parasitic inductance arithmetic, four coupling pain points, six optimization steps, and the measurement setup that proves the result.
1. introduzione
A modern plasma cutter does not strike the arc with steady voltage. A resonant tank at 20 kHz to 2 MHz rings the electrode-to-nozzle gap until the gas breaks down into a conductive channel.
Several elements sit between the tank capacitor and the arc: an ignition transformer, a coupling capacitor, the wiring inductance and the stray capacitance of the torch assembly. Each one transforms, delays or absorbs part of the pulse.
The efficiency of that delivery decides how fast the arc strikes, how much nozzle material leaves with each event, and how many attempts the machine needs before a stable pilot arc holds. Field reports put the waste between 30 % and 50 %.
This article gives the tank equations, the damping window, the parasitic arithmetic, four pain points, six optimization steps, and the measurement that proves the design.
2. Meccanismo fondamentale
2.1 The series model and the impedance
The ignition loop behaves as a series RLC network whose state variables are the tank voltage and the tank current.
f_r = 1 / (2π √(L C))
where f_r is the resonant frequency in hertz, L is the total series inductance in henries, which includes the transformer leakage and the wiring, and C is the tank capacitance in farads. A 4.7 nF tank with 1 µH of loop inductance rings at 2.32 MHz.
Z_0 = √(L / C)
where Z_0 is the characteristic impedance of the loop. The same tank and loop give Z_0 = 14.6 Ω, so a 10 kV pre-charge drives 685 A of peak current and stores 235 mJ in the tank.
2.2 Voltage delivered to the gap
An ideal lossless loop would put the full turns-ratio voltage across the gap. Damping takes a share of it.
V_gap = n V_C exp(−π / (2 Q))
where V_gap is the voltage that reaches the gap, n is the turns ratio, V_C is the pre-charge voltage, and Q is the loaded quality factor of the loop. At Q = 8.8 the exponent costs 16 % of the ideal voltage, so the gap sees 0.84 nV_C.
2.3 Damping ratio and delivered energy
The damping ratio normalises the total series resistance against the characteristic impedance.
ζ = R_total / (2 Z_0)
where ζ is the damping ratio, R_total is the total series resistance including capacitor ESR, switch on-resistance and winding AC resistance, and Z_0 is the characteristic impedance.
η_coupling = exp(−2π ζ_loss)
where η_coupling is the fraction of stored energy delivered into the discharge and ζ_loss is the part of the damping ratio that comes from the loss resistance alone, with the gap load excluded. The relation is steep: ζ_loss = 0.057 delivers 70 %, 0.11 delivers 50 %, and 0.15 delivers 39 %.
Ring count comes from the loaded damping, which includes the gap load. A loaded damping ratio of 0.15 holds the oscillation for about five half-cycles, and 0.40 ends it in two. Industrial tanks sit between those numbers so the arc root has time to anchor.
2.4 The coupling capacitor
The coupling capacitor blocks the DC cutting current and passes the ignition burst. Its reactance must stay small against the leakage impedance, or the two form a divider that absorbs stored energy before it reaches the gap.
X_C = 1 / (2π f_r C_c)
where X_C is the reactance of the coupling capacitor, f_r is the resonant frequency, and C_c is the coupling capacitance. Hold X_C below 10 % of the leakage reactance at f_r. A 470 pF coupling capacitor at 2.32 MHz presents 146 Ω, so the leakage reactance must stay above 1.46 kΩ for the loop to deliver its charge.

3. Punti critici di ingegneria
Pain Point 1: Parasitic inductance diluting the pulse
The distance between the tank capacitor, the switch and the transformer primary injects 50–200 nH per lead loop. In a 1 µH loop the 100 nH that a lead loop adds pulls f_r from 2.32 MHz to 2.21 MHz and takes 4.6 % off the peak current. A 20 % shift needs 562 nH of stray, which is what a badly routed loop delivers.
Pain Point 2: ESR heating inside the tank
Each attempt dissipates i²ESR t_pulse inside the capacitor. At 685 A, 50 mΩ and 1 µs that is 23.5 mJ, or 10 % of the stored 235 mJ. In a wound-film or general-purpose ceramic part the ESR also climbs with temperature, so loss rises, the body heats, and the loss rises again.
Pain Point 3: Breakdown voltage margin uncertainty
The gap breakdown voltage moves with gas type, flow rate, electrode condition and humidity. A tank built with 15 % margin misfires as soon as conditions degrade, and 50 % margin wastes energy and erodes the electrode faster. The margin belongs in a look-up table, not in a fixed overdrive.
Pain Point 4: Coupling capacitor mismatch
A coupling capacitor chosen without regard to dielectric absorption and voltage coefficient adds frequency-dependent attenuation. It also heats at high repetition rates, so its capacitance shifts and the tank detunes. The coupling path then costs 5–10 % of the delivered energy at the resonant frequency.
4. Fasi di progettazione
Strategy 1: Co-locate the tank, the switch and the primary
Keep the loop under 30 nH by placing the three elements together, and use laminated busbars or interleaved board layers so the current path stays a tight planar loop. Measure the inductance before and after the layout change.
Strategy 2: Choose the tank capacitor on measured ESR
Specificare N4700 (T3M) Class I parts: a SrTiO3 dielectric with tanδ at or below 0.1 %, a temperature coefficient of ±30 ppm/°C, 1 kV to 100 kV ratings and PD below 5 pC. Class I ceramics hold capacitance under bias, which keeps the tank tuned. A general-purpose condensatore a film shows the ESR rise that starts the thermal loop.
Strategy 3: Tune the coupling capacitor to the measured frequency
Characterize the transformer leakage inductance on a network analyzer, then size the coupling capacitor so its reactance at the measured f_r stays below 10 % of the leakage reactance. Tuning to the nominal frequency leaves the divider in place.
Strategy 4: Drive the pre-charge from a breakdown table
Raise V_C to a value taken from a breakdown look-up table indexed by gas type, flow and temperature. The margin then holds at 20–25 % above breakdown instead of a fixed worst-case overdrive that costs energy on every attempt.
Strategy 5: Instrument the loop and log coupling efficiency
Fit a high-impedance voltage probe and a Rogowski coil, and log the delivered-to-stored ratio on every attempt. The log drives preventive maintenance and flags capacitor aging before misfires appear.
Strategy 6: Verify the tank at both temperature extremes
Test at −20 °C and +70 °C, because inductance and capacitance both drift. A ±30 ppm/°C capacitor holds its own contribution to the frequency shift below 0.3 %, well inside the controller's pull-in range, and the margin covers the inductance drift.

5. HVC capacitors for resonant tank designs
Three numbers carry the most weight in a tank design: ESR at the ignition frequency, capacitance stability under bias and temperature, and the partial-discharge floor. HVC builds N4700 parts for all three.
Sei parametri importanti in questo caso
- tanδ at or below 0.1 % keeps the loss part of the damping ratio low, so the gap sees 0.84 nV_C at Q = 8.8 where a heavily damped loop at Q = 3.3 delivers 0.62 nV_C.
- ±30 ppm/°C holds the resonant frequency inside 0.3 % from −20 °C to +70 °C, which removes cold-start misfires and hot-shift detuning.
- 1 kV to 100 kV ratings let one dielectric platform cover pilot-arc igniters, main-arc injectors and high-energy cutting supplies.
- PD below 5 pC removes internal voids and field crowding, so the capacitor does not become the weak point of the insulating chain.
- Migliori HVCT8G screw-terminal cylindrical package allows the tight low-inductance mounting the loop needs without giving up creepage.
- Field record: an HVC 40 kV / 441 screw-mount capacitor replaced international first-tier parts in high-voltage field-service programs, and the same construction matches the electrical parameters of riferimento incrociato candidati.

6. Domande frequenti
Q1: How much stray inductance is too much?
Judge it against the loop. In a 1 µH loop the 100 nH that a lead loop adds costs 4.6 % of resonant frequency and 4.6 % of peak current, and a 20 % shift needs 562 nH.
Q2: What damping ratio should the tank target?
Two windows. Keep the loss part of the damping ratio at or below 0.11 for 50 % energy delivery, and hold the loaded ratio, which includes the gap, between 0.15 and 0.40 so the tank rings long enough for the arc root to anchor.
Q3: How much energy does one attempt lose in the capacitor?
i²ESR t_pulse. At 685 A through 50 mΩ for 1 µs that is 23.5 mJ, one tenth of the 235 mJ stored in a 4.7 nF tank at 10 kV.
Q4: How do I size the coupling capacitor?
Tune it to the measured resonant frequency and keep its reactance below 10 % of the leakage reactance. A 470 pF capacitor at 2.32 MHz presents 146 Ω, so the leakage must stay above 1.46 kΩ.
Q5: Why is a breakdown look-up table better than a fixed overdrive?
A fixed overdrive has to cover the worst case, so it wastes energy on every easy ignition. A table indexed by gas, flow and temperature holds the margin at 20–25 % above breakdown in every condition.
Q6: How is the tank verified in production?
Log the delivered-to-stored energy ratio on every attempt with a voltage probe and a Rogowski coil, and re-measure at −20 °C and +70 °C. A falling ratio points to capacitance drift, ESR growth or a detuned loop.
